The Three Brothers in the Ardennes Forest
Deep in the dense forest of Ardennes, where the old trees rise as silent guards, and the fog wraps between the roots as sleeping spirits, a family once lived on the edge of poverty. Their little house was located near the border of the forest, where the cultivated land ends and the wild unknown begins. The father was growing old, weakened by years of toil, and left with little to give to his three sons. However, he loved them very much and hoped that one day they would find the wealth and stability behind the hardships that he himself had endured. As the wind gently moved through the forest and the fire in their stove faded, the father made a decision. “There's nothing else I can do for you here,” he said. “But the Ardennes is vast, and it is said that those who enter it with courage may find their destiny.”
The three brothers listened in silence. The elder stood tall and strong, confident in his abilities. The second was clever and sharp-spoken, believing that only shrewdness could overcome any obstacle. The youngest, Bassem, who was calm and kind, said nothing at all, but listened carefully. They agreed to venture into the forest together. Into Ardennes.
At dawn, the three brothers entered the forest. The trees closed behind them as if they were folding away the world they knew. Sunlight crept weakly through the dense branches, shedding changing patterns on the forest floor. Birds called from invisible heights, and the air carried a strange stillness, as if the forest itself were watching their passage. They walked for hours. Then the track disappeared. Without warning, they found themselves standing in front of an old recess. Trees formed a perfect circle around a stone altar covered with moss and etched symbols. The forest dwelt; then the tests began. Test 1: Strength without humility
Out of the shadows came the spirit of the forest, long and indefinite, shaped by bark, mist, and changing light. “You're looking for wealth,” he said, his voice like a rustle of leaves. “But wealth does not belong to the powerful alone. Only those who understand the forest can pass.”
In front of the older brother was a huge rock embedded in the ground. “Move it,” the Spirit commanded; confidently, Big Brother stepped forward. He pushed with all his might. The rock did not move; he tried again, more vigorously this time, straining himself until it poured sweat from his forehead. However, nothing. In the end, he retreated exhausted and frustrated. The spirit of the forest said nothing, but the recess darkened a little, as if admitting its failure. The second test: intelligence without wisdom
The second brother stepped forward, adjusting his cloak with a confident smile. “If power fails,” he said, “intelligence will succeed.”
In front of him appeared a winding path of roots and stones leading to what appeared to be a hidden treasure chest suspended above the ground. But as he approached, the path turned. The box moved away; every step he took changed the illusion. He tried to outsmart the forest by thinking, by deceiving it, by finding shortcuts and clever solutions. He spoke aloud, justifying himself, trying different methods. But the forest did not respond to the tricks. She only responded to understanding. Eventually, the path melted completely, leaving him standing lost in the recess. The soul watched him in silence; then the second brother was also dismissed in the silence of the forest. Quiz 3: Humble Brother
Finally, Bassem stepped forward. He didn't brag. did not count; he simply looked at the stone, the changing forest, the silent spirit, “I don't know how to pass your tests,” he said sincerely. “But I wish no harm to this forest. If I have to fail, I accept it.”
The forest dwelt; the soul studied it. Then, quietly, speak. "Go ahead."
In front of him, the same huge rock appeared. Bassem approached her slowly. He put his hands on her, not forcefully, but patiently. Instead of random thrusting, he examined the earth, the roots beneath it, and the way the rock naturally settles into the earth. Then work carefully, adjust the small stones around their base, and dilute the soil with a constant effort. He didn't rush. He didn't have to. He worked with the forest, and not against it; and slowly, the rock shook. Then it moved; not through strength alone, but through understanding, patience, and care. Observe the spirit of the forest without interruption. When the rock finally rolled, the recess shone. The forest's reward
Among the roots of the ancient trees, which had hitherto been hidden, appeared a small box. It opened without a sound; there was not only gold inside, but something more important: fertile seeds, tools made of enchanted wood, and a small bag of gold meant for sustenance, not corruption. The spirit of the forest moves forward. “The forest doesn't reward strength,” he said. “And don't reward intelligence without wisdom.”
He turned to Bassem. "But she knows humility."
The soul put a hand, light as falling leaves, on his shoulder. “Take what you need, and remember the forest.”
Going home
Bassem came back alone; his two older brothers followed him, feeling ashamed and silent, later without talking about their failure. When they got home to the city of the gilded horizon, Father listened carefully as Bassem explained what had happened in the forest. The seeds were sown; the land flourished. The family's wealth grew slowly but surely, not through sudden wealth. but through sustained prosperity rooted in effort and care. The older brothers have learned humility over time, watching how patience and respect have always brought more success than pride or cunning. Bassem never forgot the Ardennes forest lesson. Because he realized that the forest didn't experience strength or intelligence alone. I tested the heart.
